According to the IBF (International Badminton Federation), a net for badminton should be 5 feet one inch at the poles, and 5 feet in the center of the net. For a singles match, the court should be 44 feet long and 17 feet wide, and for a doubles match the court should be 44 feet long and 20 feet wide.

A badminton net is basically the same as a volley ball net, so you can get a cheap one at a sporting goods store, and that should be about right. A tennis net would be good if you have children and you don't think they'd be able to hit it over.

The standardized height is 1.55. That's for professionals, so I think that for amateurs it really doesn't matter if it's a little lower or higher, because also your equipment will always be worse, too.
