How does fabric softener work?

If I don't use it, my clothes are all static-y.

Liquid fabric softener lays down a fine layer of paraffin (wax) on the fibers, which impedes static electricity. Softener sheets do a similar job in the dryer.

Fabric softeners work by coating the surface of your clothes with a thin layer of chemicals that have have lubricant properties and are electrically conductive, which prevents the build up of static electricity. It also provides an increased resistance to stains, and reduction of wrinkling and pilling in your clothing.

Fabric softener coats the fibers of the cloth with chemicals to help reduce static and make clothes feel softer. This creates a hydrophobic layer that repels water and helps fabric feel softer. This also reduces the ability of the fabric to absorb moisture, which is why you shouldn't use fabric softener on towels!

It creates a very thin layer of lubricating and conducting material on clothes. That way all static charge is removed and clothes become soft.
