A fuel indicator works by measuring the amount of fuel, which we all mostly use gas, or a reaction that forms some sort of energy, such as electricity or water, that accurately measures the amount of fuel a machinery or a activity has left in comparison to its limited capacity.

There is a float in your gas tank that measures how much gas is in your tank and the gausge you see on your dash relays that information to you.

It is based on the resistance in the ground circuit. Most vehicles go to full on low resistance and empty on a high resistance or open circuit. GM vehicles work just the opposite and are full on an open circuit and empty on low resistance.

Inside the tank of a car there is a sensor with a arm mounted to it. This arm has a float on it. When gas is added the float rise moving the arm up. This in turn allows more electricity flow throw the sensor. This then makes the gas reading change. The opposite occurs when the arm drops.
