Batteries are based on a chemical reaction. Many reactions are viable, because they have differing characteristics; voltage, temperature tolerance, shelf life, capacity, cost and recharge, amongst others. The reaction combines 2 chemicals that yields a net charge available for power. Rechargeables reverse the reaction, restoring the chemicals, although imperfectly.

A battery is basically a can or vessel that contains chemicals that produce electrons. Chemical reactions that produce electrons are called electrochemical reactions. The electrons flow from the ends of the battery (The terminals or the + or - sides) and into the device you are powering. This is electricity.
