Well you need to hit the tv/vcr button that should be located on the front of your VCR and go with channel changing from there.

I watch it by turning it on and if i want to watch the vcr channels then I just turn that on as well but on another tv so I can watch both.

You have to have your television channels programmed through your VCR. So when you do change channels it is from your VCR.
