Trim it aggressively! You cut branches back to reduce the distance between buds and to encourage taper and denser finer growth. For the roots you trim them to encourage a dense root mass. By reducing the root mass you can get them into tiny pots...thus forcing the tree to adapt to this restrictive environment.

Every gardener nneds prunning shears. This can be used to trim those trees that you do not want to grow too big.
