If you have a drake as well as a hen, it's almost positively fertile. However if you're not sure, wait about ten days and candle the egg with a flashlight. You should see the embryo starting to form.

No it doesn't look different. But if you can pick it up or feel it, you will be able to tell if its empty. If it has weight to it, it is fertilized. If it is empty, it should feel light with maybe what seems like a pebble inside.
