If already stained you should start by sanding existing cabinets first. Then you should stain by applying with a brush and use long strokes in the same direction as the wood grain. If you let dry and color is too light, apply a 2nd coat of stain and view results after drying a second time.

If it has polyurathane on it, you will have to remove it. Paint thiner may work. Then, sand it down a little and use a paint brush to apply woodstain.

When staining oak you should be careful not to use a stain that is too dark, because the grain will be very pronounced. While some may like this look, its not for everyone. Always test the stain on a piece of scrap wood or on a non-visible area. Apply in a dust-free environment per manufactures instructions.

You chould sand all the old stain off and then use a paintbrush and a good stain and just start painting.

The first step is to determine what kind of finish you want. A dark oak finish? A lighter, warmer natural oak amber color? You then need to prep the wood by sanding it down removing old varnish or paint. Then apply a base coat and the stain of your choice.
