You simply use basic algebra to solve the equation. 1) 4-2(3-a)=8 2) -2(3-a)=8(4) 3) (3-a)=(8*4)/-2 4) -a=((8*4)/-2)-3 5) a= -((8*4)/-2)+3 5) a=19

First carry 4 to the right hand of the equation to get eight minus four which gives four on the right hand side. Then divide both sides by negative two to get three minus a on the left and negative two on the right. Put a on the right and bring -2 to the left to get a equals five.
