Most drain stoppers in the bathroom have a slot that lets you just turn the stopper until you get to the slot opening then pull the stopper straight up and on out. It takes a little practice to find the slot but once you find it, it becomes easier each time.

Beneath the snk there is a P-Trap. Directly above the trap is a connection to the drain stopper mechanism. The mechanism is a pivot point for the rod that pushes the stopper up and down. If you loosen the connection you will be able to pull the stopper from the drain.

usually there is a thread in stop that screws into the drain pipe holding the stopper in place. remove and pull stopper out
