If you're talking about the original release on the NES, it's quite simple. Use the D-Pad to control your character's walking left and right. Use the A button to jump and hold the B button down while moving to run. The B button also allows your character to shoot fireballs once he has powered up with a fire flower.

Mario Brothers is probably one of the most complex videogames out there. The strategy and depth involved is endless. What you have to do is use the D-Pad to move. Push left to go left, right to go right. Hold B to run and A to jump. Jump directly on top of the enemies to defeat them!
