Basically, you make a saturated solution of the substance you want. Then you suspend a little crystal with a thread and as the solution evaporates slowly it will grow.

Fill a glass with salt water and tie a string to a pencil. Lay the pencil over the glass. As the water evaporates, crystals will grow on the string.

Well if you want to learn how to make crystals you can get many self help books from the internet or any store. You have to basically get ice or freeze ice however you may call it. Then mold it to a crystal shape. You may need asphalt as well.
