Make your cuts before placing shelf paper down. With backing still in position, start at one corner, peel back a part as you use a wet cloth to smooth as you peel more. Only do a small area at a time. Your shelf paper will look more professional doing it this way.

The best way is to make your cuts before you try to slide it into place. When it is even and fits the opening, start removing the paper backing. Start at one corner and only do a small part at the time. You can use a damp rag to smooth while you go to the next area.
