How do you hook up 12-volt batteries in a series?

I have to draw a schematic.

Keep the batteries side by side.take pieces of wire joining one positive end of one battery to the negative end of the other battery.

Run jumper wires from each negative terminal to adjacent battery's positive terminal until the final positive terminal is connected; first battery's positive and last battery negative terminals provide multiplied voltage.
