Heave to is a term when you are slowing down a sailboat so that the crew does not have to steer and can resume to begin to do other things. Most often this is done so that sailors and captain can take a break.

Heave to is to stop a vessel's progress by putting out an anchor or hauling a headsail to windward which is in the direction of the wind.
