If you want to clean a penny, throw it into some freshly squeezed lemon juice so the corrosion process can occur. It will clean your penny and make it brand new again without ruining it.
Use a straight vinegar solution to clean any coin. Put the coin in the vinegar overnight and the penny will be nice and clean without any buffing. Buffing an older coin may take off some of the surface.
