Student loans can almost never be forgiven. If you contact Sallie Mae, however, they can help you with a forbearance, a deferrment, or a graduated repayment program.

Call Sallie Mae first. They may be able to make modifications to your loan so you can afford the payments. They also may be able to defer the payments for another period of time until you can pay off other debt first. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Not being able to pay a student loan is not a vehicle for "forgiveness. " "Forgiveness" involves military service, the Peace Corps, and serving in some jobs in deprived areas. This depends on the original lender, provided the loans have not been consolidated. Rework your budget to make your student loans a priority. Failure to pay will ruin your financial life.

SLMA is a secondary market that handles loans in repayment. Some lenders have forgiveness partial forgiveness programs for time spent in specific careers (teaching, medicine, etc. ) in underserved area. The military has a few forgiveness programs. Talk to SLMA about your situation. You may be eligible for economic hardship consideration.
