How do you gauge job satisfaction and morale?

I judge morale by the responsiveness I receive from my employees. When I talk to them, do they seem engaged with what we are talking about, or do they give you general niceties and cliche's? It's not necessarily whether or not they are happy or enthusiastic all the time. It is how honest they are about it.

The company I work for participates in an annual "Best Places to Work" survey. All employees are asked to complete a questionnaire. Results are benchmarked against other companies.
