A filter system, water change, and tank hood will help reduce the problem. If algae is present it may be the algae causing the smell and it should be removed.

I have used a cap full of bleach when cleaning my tank. I use very little water with it, and clean out the rocks of all fecal matter. It is usually the rocks, that cause the stink. Be sure to dry out and clean rocks as best as you can.
