The best way to figure driving distances, in the UK or elsewhere, is to use mapping websites such as Mapquest or Google Earth. When you enter your starting and ending locations, the sites will calculate the driving distance, which may be in kilometers or miles, as you choose. If you only have a map, it's a more laborious process.

UK uses a different metric system. They measure distances in kilometers. Abbreviated Km. I am not sure how much the distance varies from miles. It's definitely more in Kilometers than in Miles.
