Voters elect members of the House of Commons in single-member constituencies. The candidate who receives the most votes in a given constituency is elected to the House of Commons. The party leader whose party won in a majority of constituencies is appointed Prime Minister by the Queen. If no party has a majority, negotiations may be necessary first.

National election in the UK are conducted using a parliamentary approach. The Prime Minister is elected by the party that wins the highest number of individual constituencies throughout the country. Thus, the Prime Minister is not directly elected and is subject to the approval of parliament. A general election must be called at least every five years.
