There is two general accepted answers. Linear and non-linear. In the film industry they use automated systems to review and then electronically cut film, the linear method is cut-splice. In the digital video arena, the most common answer in non-linear, using digital video editing software such as Apple's Final cut pro, or Avid.

It is a process of selecting different shots and giving a meaningful sequence of all the joined shots , also it is a process of connecting the sequences . This process also requires the creativity of identifying which scenes are to be in proper sequence. Lastly, it can said that is a form of art which makes an interesting story to tell.

There are several computer programs that will help you edit film. The most famous one is Final Cut Pro. It's really worth the investment if you're serious about becoming a filmmaker. If you're a more casual director, all Apple computers have a great program called iMovie that will meet your needs.
