Petite point is a smaller form of needle point. It is usually done on a canvas backing and may be done with wool, silk or other yarns or embroidery yarns. These yarns are purchased in skeins of multi thread strands and sometimes must be divided. The Petite point stitch is smaller than the typical needlepoint stitch.

If you are looking to do petite point for the first time try buying a beginner's kit at your local craft or yarn store. All of the materials needed to do the project, including instructions will be in the kit, and not only will you learn the techniques, but you will have a satisfying finished project at the end.

It really depends on what you're going for. There are many different ways to do this. Refer to the item schematic, there are many item brands/types for a general answer.
