The exponents are subtracted, numerator minus denominator. For example, to divide (x^4 + 3x^3 + 4x^2) by x^2, the exponent of the denominator (2) is subtracted from each exponent in the numerator, resulting in x^2 + 3x + 4. In this example, there is a remainder: (x^4 + x^3 + 3) / x^2 = x^2 + x + 3/x^2.

Polynomials division you subtract the exponents of the same base. If your exponent sustraction result negative, if its in the denominator pass it to the numerator to make it positive and if its negative result is in the numerator pass it to the denominator to obtain a positive exponent result.
