Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disorder with no cure. Sometimes, cysts may grow from when a child is in the womb. The cysts may grow so large that they compromise the kidney function and require removal. They can also grow so large that they cause undo pain and thus require removal.

The kidney cysts in children would hinder in urination process. Only a Nephrologist or a Urologist could decide the time of removal of kidney cysts in children. The first step is to get a biopsy test from the affected part, as the biopsy itself would be associated with the removal of small sample of cysts.

Regardless of age, I think if a cyst on the kidney isn't causing any problems, it probably won't need to be removed. If it is causing chronic pain, it will.

You decide to remove kidney cysts in children just as you decide in adults. If the cysts are large and interfering with normal kidney function, the goal is to wait until the child is sufficiently grown, usually after puberty, before removing the cysts. Again, only if this is an issue affecting kidey function do you need to remove it.
