The best way to avoid whole class problems is have a consistent routine. Greet the students at the door, make sure they know your expectations. Always be consistent with discipline.

Students can write about what they did wrong in a behavior journal. This helps the student to think about what they did wrong and gives the teacher documentation too.

With most behavior problems, it is best to try to find out the students motivation. If they like to tell others what to do to or lead, reward on task and positive behaviors with leadership opportunities. Enlisting pop visits from parents would be my last resort.
