If you e-filed, you can check with the service you e-filed through to see if your return was accepted. If you filed by mail, you simply have to wait. Once you know your return was accepted you can check at the IRS "Where's My Refund? " website.

If a refund, go to the IRS web site and click on "Where's my refund" link. If tax is due, a return is accepted unless the IRS notifies you otherwise.

After you have transmitted your taxes you have to allow a certain time ususally six weeks before you can find out about the status. If you efile it will take less time. Just call the number given and imput your social security, amount of estimated refund and filing status.
