How do you check a coil on a lawn mower?

Get a friend. Remove the spark plug, and plug the spark plug back into the spark plug wire. do not touch any metal on the engine. Touch the threads of the plug to bare metal on the engine, have your friend crank over the engine. If you see a spark, the coil is fine.

You can pull out the spark plug and make sure there is no oil or any residue in the coil. If it looks clean the best thing to do is wipe it off and install a new spark plug.

Remove the spark plug wire form the spark plug. Hold the wire about 1/4" away from the plug and pull or crank the engine. If you see sparks good coil.
