Changing your name requires a legal filing, usually by an attorney. A name change costs roughly $400 to $600. Generally, you would then appear before a judge and state your reasons for the name change. If the name change is approved, you would receive legal documentation of the approval to use to change all files and matters under your name.

Go to the courthouse and get the necessary papers and put the ad in the paper as required. You will get your hearing date to change it.

Contact your local court of record. Petition for a small filing fee. If divorcing, the name change can be done automatically when the final decree is issued.

Although state laws vary, generally, you petition the Superior court of your state. Some cases, such as adoption of minors, can be done in Probate or Family court.

Forms to change your name are available at every court house and many city offices. You file a request to change your name. It cannot be that of a celebrity or have the intent to deceive. This is done routinely at marriage and divorce, but if over the age of 18, you can request it at any time.
