Scientists can detect black holes using light. Since black holes produce substantial amounts of gravitational pull, any area with strange light properties is likely to contain a black hole. However, you cannot actually "see" a black hole, you must use other methods like the one just described (gravitational light lensing).

From calculations, scientists were able to predict certain events in space, which have been observed. Those events are indirect consequences of black holes (such as gamma ray bursts and gravitational lensing).

We know of the existence of black holes due to the gravitational pull that they exert on the objects around them, which allows us to determine their mass.
