After starting the generator allow it to run without load. change over is provided to control the supply.after acquiring required speed supply will switch on. Check the output voltage and also check fluctuation.
The question is not clear What do you mean about the question Generator shorting or not working , otherwise generator output line surge. These faults are find out using a multymetre
