Have it tested by x-ray at a quality assurance lab (which costs around $20), or by a jeweler using an electronic device.

There is an acid test jewelers can do to test the authenticity of gold. An at home test is that gold sinks and most cheap metals will either float near the top or sink slowly. Real gold also reacts to some types of makeup such as foundation. It will leave a black mark if rubbed with the makeup.

Take your jewelry to a professional that has the proper materials to test your gold. They will scratch a small place on your ring and test it with acid.

Well if it is pure gold not plated then you can put a magnet to it. If it is attracted to it or sticks then it is not pure gold.
