It used to be that parents were advised to tell their children to never talk to strangers. Instead, experts now advise telling kids to be careful, but that there are some safe strangers, such as police officers, nurses, doctors, teachers, and women with their kids. Children should not give out personal information unless they are with one of these individuals.

I would sit my child down after a long day of bonding, like after going out for ice-cream, and have an important chat. In that talk, I would warn them that in this world there are good and bad people. People who seem nice can be bad. So be careful who you talk to, never go anywhere with a stranger.

I started with some of the dangers that strangers can pose, then gave my girls tips on what to do if confronted with this situation, such as, never getting into a car, screaming alot and as loud as they could, also looking for help from someone in uiform ( security guard, policeman, etc).

Sit down with your child and ask see how much they know about strangers. Once you know how much they already know whether it be a lot or not much at all, you can than tell them all you wnat them to know. Explain what a stranger is, and talk about not talking or going anywhere with a stranger.

You should make it clear that there are only certain types of strangers that they should talk to, e.g. policemen, and that they shouldn't talk to any other strangers.

You just have to be honest with them about the dangers of talking to people they do not know and what can happen if they do.

Use small words but be forceful in the items you are trying to get across. Make sure that you have an answer to all 'why' questions.

Sit your child down, look your child in the eye and let them know you are serious. Tell them that some people do bad things to hurt people and that they should only talk to family, teachers, and friends. Tell them to yell "no" and run to an adult they trust when adult strangers try to talk to them.

Tell them never to go anywhere without you. They can talk to family and friends you give them permission to, but not anyone else.

A good place to start is with Scruff McGruff. This is a dog cartoon character that dresses like a detective who is a fun and welcoming for kids.
