I am a cat person so I say let him keep attacking. But seriously, alot of times cats and dogs will get along perfectly and then other times they hate each other. If the situation doesn't improve you may just have to keep them separated.

Preventing the dog from getting into the cat's food or litter box to reduce territorial defensiveness. Providing each animal with his own toys, food bowls, and bed.

Keep a water gun near by, when the cat begins to attack the dog, squirt the cat with the water gun.

You might be able to train a grown dog to get along with a cat, but cats are stubborn and won't be able to get trained to do the same. I'd say the best thing is two get a small kitten and a puppy around the same time, so they learn to be around each other.
