Seal up all entry points into the engine. Put some rat poison around the engine, and check it regularly for dead rats.

Spot the way through which the pack rats get into the car engine and place a rat kill cake in that way so that rats will die easily. Instead of rat kill, rat traps can also be used to trap and kill the pack rats entering the car engine and damaging them.

I would buy some squirrel poison and put it up in to the engine brackets of the car. If you don't want to kill them, I would get a cat or borrow a cat. Often just the smell of a cat is enough to drive the rats away.

Homeless pack rats are the main threat to the vehicles. A highly sealed garage or parking in an open area is the most suitable way to keep the rats away.
