If you want to install a light post on your yard, you'll first need to dig a hole, and lay some concrete, with the attachment bolts facing up. Once the concrete has been layed, you can then attach the lampost to the bolts that you placed inside of the concrete.

First you get permit from the city. Then you call the utilities company and find out where the underground wires or pipes are. You dig a trench lay outdoor wire that is connected to the main line in the house, or hook it up to the gas line and attached the light post.

Lamp posts themselves are a pretty easy job to install, but the electrical connections should be done by a professional electrician to be safe. Dig a hole 12 inches across and 18" deep, and a trench from your electrical source (at the house) to the post hole for running wire. Stand the post straight, backfill with crushed stone or cement.

Anchor the light post in a large( about 2 gal size) can full of concrete. Cut a hole in the post for electrical wires as close to the concrete as possible. Dig a hole deep enough for concrete and wires to be well below ground level. Place post in hole and refill to the top of the concrete.

When dealing with electricity it is recommended that you hire someone with experience. Even the easiest tasks can be dangerous. If you must do it, go to your local hardware store and get a basic beginner's how-to book. Remember to use gloves when dealing with electricity and have an assistant when installing.
