It is hard to give you good advice without knowing why the dog has irregular breathing. It could be from an allergen that is affecting your dog. If so remove the allergen and he'll be fine. Or it could be asthma. The vet can give you an oral pill that will help with the bronchial inflammation.

Is your dog overweight? What is causing your dog's irregular breathing? If it is due to weight you can reduce your dogs caloric intake and exercise your dog. If it is realated to something else please get a vets opinion.

Canine's usually take 15 to 20 breaths per minute. Irregular breathing is just one common sign that your dog is ill. If, you notice prolonged panting, shortness in breath or any type of irregular breathing, you need to speak with your vet as soon as possible. Check for other signs of illness and alert your vet of those signs too.

If the dog is an old dog, it may be that he has an enlarged heart or a heart problem. This often makes them pant and have a more strained breathing pattern. You should take the dog to the vet if it isn't an old dog and it may have a respiratory problem that the vet could help you with.
