Every day I put a lemon in the disposal. Or, if its really bad, you may want to pour about 1/2 cup of bleach down the drain.

After cleaning it to remove any obvious source of odor, you can try commercial products or more natural products. Some natural solutions include pouring baking soda and vinegar down the disposal, putting lemon or orange slices in the disposal or grinding ice cubes in the disposal to help remove food particles that can rot and cause odors.

Garbage disposal odor can be really bad if you don't completely process all the food you put down the disposal. Be sure to run your disposal for a few seconds every time you wash dishes to grind up and wash away any food particles. I also throw a quartered citrus fruit and baking soda down the disposal to freshen it.

A combination of vinegar and baking soda will do the trick. The two can clean carpets, counter tops, tile; anything that's dirty. I feel that the bubbling action of the baking soda will wash away at whatever is sticking to the garbage disposal and thus causing the smell. If nothing is left, then it will leave a fresh smell behind.

The first step is to ensure that it is always cleared of food; grind it as used and empty of larger food particles. Also try grinding orange peels daily, or after every use if it's really bad. It'll add a light citrus-y sent to the entire kitchen.
