You can go to the courthouse and get the papers required for changing your name. There is a specific timeline that you must follow to the letter. (Google for details for your state. ) You must appear before a judge and explain; the judge has the right to determine that your reason isn't valid.

This is a tricky task. You will have to submit a request to the court system in whatever state you live in, you will then need to provide a reason as to why you want to change your name.

The most common way is to submit an application in accordance with a particular state's legal requirements. A woman may also adopt her husband's last name.

A petition must be filed with the Court and notice published. An appearance in Court with testimony as to why you are requesting the change is required before Judge approves.

You will probably need to file a petition in the state where you live. The petition must be in writing. You will also need to provide documents like birth certificates.

You will need to go through the court system to legally change your name. This will not make your former identity disappear and the court may reject your request. Visit your city hall for the information about the court process and the paperwork needed in your jurisdiction.
