Horses can show emotions through body language such as pinned ears. Also through vocalizations. If stressed or worried they may whinny. sometimes when happy they may nicker.

Anger is shown by pinning ears back, and possibly baring teeth, or turning to kick. Pleasure is shown in a variety of ways. When you scratch a spot that really needs it, your horse will stretch out his/her neck and extend lips making a silly face. My horses particularly enjoy grooming, and will push up close while I brush them.

You can tell a horse's emotional state by studying their ear & tail positions. Horses make several types of calls, including the nicker, neigh, scream, etc which indicate different things.

They do it in a lot of ways. They will nuzzle you if happy, and want attention. If angry or scared they will lay their ears back; if scared they will whinny and jerk away from whatever is there. If nervous they will go from foot to foot or pace.
