Current events affect elections because candidates will use current issues to build their platforms and attract their voters. News won't be considered too late during an election; but news always does affect politics.

If an election is during a time of relative peace, more emphasis will be placed on social issues such as education and health care. These are more left-leaning issues. During times of global crises or war, people often vote for more right leaning parties and care more about homeland security issues.
