Prior to the Seven Years War the British had largely ignored their American colonies. After the war, to help pay for it, the British attempted to reimpose controls on the colonies through taxes and regulation. The Seven Years War in Europe sparked hostilities in North America in a conflict that became known as the French and Indian War. Following the war, England found itself in debt and raised taxes in the colonies to pay for the fighting in America. The American Patriots used these taxes as the basis for their declaration of independence from England.
