Radiohead had already released six massively successful albums when In Rainbows was released for free on 2007. Many smaller bands argue that this model would not work for them because they don't have the fanbase of a huge group like Radiohead.

Radiohead's "In Rainbows" is critically acclaimed for selling 1. 75 million copies to date and awarded two grammy awards for Best Alternative Music Album in 2009. Fans were able to order the album online for whatever price they saw fit. 62% of downloaders chose to pay nothing while 38% voluntarily paid an average of $6 for the album.

"In Rainbows" was released after Radiohead became successful. They already had a large fanbase, and many loyal fans will pay for the music to support the artist despite being able to get it for free. I would not expect a band with no pre-existing recognition to be as successful with this strategy.

That is exactly how they did it. give the fans what they want for free, they will be willing to spend the cash on merchandise and tickets for concerts. almost every band will eventually follow in their footsteps because of the money they made of the tours and t shirts and movies.

In todays rapidly advancing communication age, album sales don't compare to concert tickets, advertising, sponsorships, appearances, and all other ways for popular bands to make money.
