MN is called "the Land of 10,000 Lakes" because of its large number of lakes(over 11,000). It's nickname "the North Star State" comes from the state motto "L'etoile du Nord". "The Gopher State" comes from a historical cartoon printed in 1857, which actually shows a tree squirrel!

The State of Minnesota is a water-based state with more than 11,000 lakes and water points, the biggest lake being Lake Superior. The State has been nicknamed 10,000 lakes state because of the sheer number of lakes. The word Minnesota is believed to come from an American Indian word for water.
