Gently scratch the piece with your finger, if you smell something akin to burnt hair, that is a good sign. Do not insert a hot pin into the ivory!

Real ivory could be differentiated from the fake one by way of appearance and shining. The original ones would have more attractive look.

Real ivory has a specific shine to it. Yet fake ivory can break easier than plastic can. With an elephants tusk, you can pick up a piece of meat, wash it down and still keep it clean.

Real ivory has a special feel to it. It also has a certain smell that can not be mistaken. I prefer oldspice liquid soap.
