Gold clad is marked with various symbols or codes, for example GEP or HGE for gold electroplate, or RGP for rolled gold plate. 1/20 12K GF is a standard mark for Gold Filled jewelry which is at least 5% 12 karat gold by weight. The marking "gold washed" means only a very thin layer of cladding has been applied.

To determine real gold from clad is to test the piece with nitric or hydrochloric acid. Real gold will have no reaction but clad gold does have a reaction.

Put a drop of nitric acid..Gold will not dissolve.Almost all other metals shows up
