We have grown squash this summer and after picking it from the garden, we have placed it inside next to a window in our kitchen and after a couple of days it is good.

Here is how to ripen a butternut squash. You can place the squash in a brown paper grocery sack and put it in a garage, pantry, or other cool area. The squash will ripen in several days. Even after they are ripe, they will be good for several months if stored in a cool, dry place.

You can ripen your squash by placing it in a brown paper bag (like a lunch bag) in your refrigerator with an apple. As the apple decays, it releases gasses that make most fruits and vegetables ripen.

From my experience and research, they should ripen fine on the counter after a while, They say that butternut squash tastes best after 3 months of shelf storage.
