How can I repair my lawn mower start rope which won't rewind anymore?

It depends on what type of mower but you usually can replace the pull cord unit with a new one.

Usually underneath the starter rope pulley is a coil spring which causes the rope to retract. In most cases, this spring has only come loose and can be easily fixed by removing the housing cover, and reconnecting the spring after giving it a few turns to put some tension back into the spring. Put everything back together, good to go.

Your going to remove the unit that houses the rope and see where it is caught up. Sometimes the rope gets twisted and won't retract. Make sure that the housing unit has a little WD-40 to loosen up the rope housing unit.
