Contribute to micro-loan sites that loan to the 3rd World like kiva. org or Grameen bank. Rather than a hand out, which keeps people dependent, these sites loan those with good business ideas to help them get out of poverty, from buying seeds as 5% (versus 25% locally) to buying livestock.

If you donate money to organizations do your research. Some will take you for a ride while others won't give the full amount to the people in need. You can do things like donating old clothing to your local Goodwill or work at a soup kitchen.

There are various like volunteering time/money to the many charities that help in Third World Countries. Just make sure to research your charity to make sure they are legitimate.
