How can I fix the timing on a Ford 302?

If it has a distributor then you can set it with a timing light. Disconnect/plug any advance mechanisms and loosen the hold-down. Then set it using the timing light.

mark crank pulley for proper timing indicators. loosen distributor hold down clamp. connect inductive timing light at battery and number one cylinder ignition wire. disconnect vacuum to distributor. with car idling aim timing light at crank pulley timing marks and turn distributor so as to match timing marks.

To set the timing put the engine to top dead center. Loosen the distributor and hook up you timing light. Disable any vacuum advance an then set the timing to factory specs.

The best way to do it is put a glass of water on the motor and then as you turn the set screw watch for the water to stop sloshing and become smooth when it becomes smooth in the glass the vehicle will be in time. You can also do an online search and it will gove you instructions.
